June 12, 1898: Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine Independence from Spain from the house’s central window. During the proclamation: The Philippine flag was officially unfurled, and the music that became the national anthem was performed. Historical importance: The shrine symbolizes the Philippine struggle for independence and the establishment of a Filipino government. Aguinaldo’s burial: Emilio Aguinaldo was buried at the shrine in 1964.
