The T29 was an experimental American heavy tank of the World War II era. The impetus for developing a new heavy tank came from the experience gained by the United States after the Normandy landings, when it became clear that there was nothing capable of effectively countering the latest German “King Tiger.” This led to plans for the development of heavy tanks designated T29 and T30. The former was intended as a direct counterpart to the Tiger II, while the latter was designed as a breakthrough tank for destroying pillboxes and other fortified positions. As a result, the main difference between the vehicles was their armament: the T29 was equipped with a long-barrelled 105 mm T5E2 gun, while the T30 carried a 155 mm T7 gun. Both tanks were planned for mass production, but the first prototypes were completed only by the end of 1947. By that time, such expensive and heavy vehicles had lost their relevance, so after the production of eight prototypes—four T29 prototypes of various modifications and four T30 prototypes, two of which were later converted into the T34—the program was cancelled.
