IFA W50 LA IFA W50 LA — a medium-duty cab-over truck produced in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) by the IFA/IWL conglomerate at Ludwigsfelde from 1965 until 1990. The W50 family was designed as a versatile 4–5 tonne workhorse and built in numerous civilian and military variants; the suffix LA denotes a version with selectable front-wheel drive (i.e., engageable front axle) intended to improve off-road mobility. About 571–572 thousand W50s of all types were manufactured, and the model saw wide export and military use across Comecon and other markets. Development & use. Development began in the late 1950s to replace older IFA trucks; series production started in July 1965 at the purpose-built Ludwigsfelde plant. The W50 was offered with two wheelbases and dozens of body variants (flatbed, tipper, van, tractor, fire engine, etc.), and it remained in production alongside planned successors because of its popularity and export importance.
