The USS Arizona (BB-39) was a Pennsylvania-class battleship of the United States Navy, best known for being destroyed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Commissioned in 1916, Arizona was one of the U.S. Navy's "standard-type" battleships. By 1941 she displaced roughly 31,000 tons at full load, was about 608 feet (185 m) long, and her main armament consisted of twelve 14-inch/45-caliber guns arranged in four triple turrets. During the Pearl Harbor attack, a Japanese armor-piercing bomb penetrated the ship near the forward main-battery magazines. A catastrophic explosion followed, destroying much of the forward portion of the ship. 1,177 officers and crewmen were killed, making Arizona responsible for nearly half of all American deaths during the attack. The wreck was never raised and remains where she sank at Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona Memorial was constructed over the wreck and dedicated in 1962.
